Derrick Crum

Derrick Crum brings over 20 years of experience in educational leadership, staff development, program management, and strategic planning. He holds a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University, a Bachelor of Arts in Family Life Education from Spring Arbor University, and an Associate Degree in Computer Systems Technology from Microcomputer Technology Institute. Currently, Derrick oversees the Martin Luther King, Jr. - César Chávez - Rosa Parks (KCP) Initiative for the State of Michigan. This initiative, established in 1986, includes seven programs designed to support academically and economically disadvantaged students from middle school through graduate studies, aiming to improve college completion rates and career success in a knowledge-based economy.

Derrick has held various roles including  an Employment Readiness Instructor with the Michigan Department of Corrections, he facilitated workforce development and employment skills training for incarcerated individuals, focusing on career exploration, equitable hiring practices, and financial literacy. He also emphasized digital literacy and prepared students for job fairs and educational opportunities upon release. In his role as a College Success Coach and Adjunct Instructor at Jackson College, Derrick guided first-year students in navigating the college experience by implementing a First Year Seminar curriculum. This program fostered teamwork, community engagement, and career planning, empowering students to achieve personal, academic, and professional goals.

Previously, Derrick served as Executive Director for Spring Arbor University, where he managed extension sites in Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. He built educational partnerships with local businesses and industries, oversaw student recruitment, and ensured efficient facility operations. As Principal and REACH Coordinator at Albion Public Schools, Derrick implemented school-wide educational programs, supervised staff, organized teacher training, and cultivated strong community relations to foster collaboration and support. He also managed the school’s budget and operational functions to ensure its success.

Through his innovative programming, strategic leadership, and dedication to equity, he has made a profound impact on individuals and institutions, leaving a legacy of educational excellence and community empowerment.
